Title

The Mawlid

Abstract

A poem by Shaykh Abd al-Baqi al-Mukashafi celebrating the birth of the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace).

Details

In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate

Surely Allah and His angels bless the Prophet: O you who believe! Call for divine blessings on him and salute him with a becoming salutation.

Welcome O Mawlid of the Chosen One breaking forth

            Dazzling the intellects with radiant lights.

We welcome your approach wholeheartedly

            Bringing good fortune, blessings, and secrets.

O Mawlid of the Chosen One

   O Dawning of Lights,

O Mine of Secrets

   O Breaking of Dawn,

O Gathering of All Blessings

   O Spring of Goodnesses,

O Home of Mercies

   O Apex of the Age:

In You the guidance dawns

   Like the morning, for mankind;

The souls enlivened with it

   As it spreads its fragrance like eternity.

O Mawlid of the Chosen One

   O Season of Good People,

O Joining of the Moons

   O Separation of Eternity,

O Mawlid of the Guide:

   In You, how many a singer sings;

In You, how many a camel driver chants

   For Souls and Minds;

In You, how many rejoice;

   In You, how many mend themselves;

In You, how many sing praises of the Prophet

   Like shining stars.

O Night of the Birth

   O Night of Joys,

O Night of Spiritual Guidance

   O Night of Good,

O Story of the Chosen One’s Life

   O Best of Evening’s Entertainment,

O Pleasure of Night Companions

   In the Most Fragrant of Remembrance.

O Story of al-Kawnain*

   O Perfection of the Two Descriptions,

O Beauty of the Two Abodes**

   O Highest of Status,

O Flower of the Creator

   O Holy Book of the Reciter,

O Guiding Star of the Night Traveler

   On land and sea,

O Most Noble of Mother and Father

   O Possessor of Honor from Both,

O Ka‘bah of the Haramain

   O Rising of the Full Moon,

You are the intercessor

   At that Gathering

When mankind is in panic

   From the distress of the Reminder.

Allah blesses you

   In prose and in poetry.

How individuals are enriched!

   O Lord, honor us!

You are without need of us

   While mankind is in want.

Send down to us provision

   And pardon us gently.

O Lord, let us not fall into wretchedness.

   O Causer of Harm,

O Creator of Worlds

   O You Who Inspire Iman,

O Far-Reaching of Perfection

   O Possessor of the Command.

* the Two Worlds

** the physical and spiritual
